Miniskirts a short history

The miniskirt first appeared in the 60s. Since the 20s designers have been raising the hemline of skirts with the mini-skirt showing up in the 60s. Mary Quant is often credited with introducing the with André Courrèges often credited as well.

A miniskirt's hem lies high up the leg above the knee showing off a lot of leg. The originator, Mary Quant first sold the minis from her Kings Road shop "Bazzzaar" where its popularity spread and it became a fashion icon. Tights or pantyhose allowed the miniskirt to realise its full potential. Without them it was either bare legs (or if you have a tan) or stockings. Stocking tops on show aren't going to win anyone a style award. Tights gave a smooth line under the skirt and didn't run the risk or ending before your skirt starts.

After a lengthening of skirts in the 70s, legs were back on show in the 90s with the mini paired with with the business suit and more recently over leggings or jeans.
