Tights or pantyhose allowed the miniskirt to realise its full potential. Without them it was either bare legs (or if you have a tan) or stockings. Stocking tops on show aren't going to win anyone a style award. Tights gave a smooth line under the skirt and didn't run the risk or ending before your skirt starts.After a lengthening of skirts in the 70s, legs were back on show in the 90s with the mini paired with with the business suit and more recently over leggings or jeans.
